Self-care…Have you been hearing & seeing this buzzword as much as I have?
Everyone’s talking about it. Everyone’s doing it. Everyone’s buying into it.
In my opinion, too many people think self care is just about manicures, pampering yourself, vacations, drinks with friends and buying something to make you feel good. Don’t get me wrong, all of these things are wonderful and certainly fit in under the umbrella of self-care, but to me they provide only short-term bouts of fulfillment.
Trust me, I experienced this myself. I was addicted to finding cheap treats, instant gratification and anything to help me feel a moment of pleasure everywhere I turned. When I would have a bad day, getting a manicure was like a breath of fresh air. But the problem was, I still wasn’t taking care of my deeper self, the part of me that needed the most love and attention. And there was certainly no bottle of wine or day at the spa that could help me.
In the fall of 2015, I hit rock bottom in my life, my marriage, my career – everything seemed to be crumbling in pieces all around me. I had been so involved in my problems that I felt like I was buried deep and desperately needed a way out, and as much as I may have wanted, packing my bags and moving to another country just wasn’t an option.
I was three days away from a doctor’s appointment that would inevitably lead me to a prescription of Zoloft and Xanax. I knew medicine would help me to cope, but coping wasn’t what I wanted. Getting to the root cause of my demise was my only goal. I knew getting to the source and fixing “it” would be the best solution long-term. With the little fight I had left in me, I decided to pick myself up. What I didn’t know then was that I was about to embark on a journey of true self-care.
The main ingredient to self-care, beyond just the manicures and pedicures, was the element of self-discovery.
I began to ask myself questions I had never asked before.
- What do I want?
- What would make me happy?
- Why do I feel this way?
- What if I did it this way?
- What do I really believe and why?
- What does my dream week look like?
- What type of life do I really want?
- What am I meant to be doing in this lifetime?
- What does it mean to be authentic?
- Who am I really?
Essentially, these questions were to get the answers I needed to finally start taking care of myself, because up until that point, I had spent my entire life taking care of others and neglecting my needs and desires. Without self-discovery, my self care journey would have continued to be an endless roller coaster of highs and lows, feel goods and moments of pampering to which the results would fade fast.
My journey of getting better was about learning to put my needs first. But first, I had to figure out what those needs were. I had to do a lot of soul-searching, reading and journaling. And once I discovered what it was that I needed, my next obstacle was developing the voice and the courage to make the necessary changes to step into a new version of myself, one that was healthier, happier and had a bigger zest for life.
I’ve literally learned how to have an affair with myself and by doing so it has allowed me to show up in every aspect of my life better, healthier, happier, and most importantly more authentic.
This journey of radical self-care, self-love and self-discovery was the way out.
Taking this path saved me because I learned how to save myself. This journey invited me to reinvent myself. I found a new perspective on how to live a happy and meaningful life. Self care has become the silent theme behind every choice I make and every thought I think. Self-discovery took me out of the very dark place and brought me to a life I desire, one that is full of love, clarity and purpose.
The highest form of self-care I’ve ever experienced was when it was partnered with aspects of self-discovery. The results will last a lifetime. The satisfaction can’t be bought. The happiness and joy from within is authentic. And the emptiness from within (that you may not even know you have, because I didn’t) gets filled for life.
To me self-care, self-love and self-discovery all go hand in hand, and are much more than just a trend. This has become not only a way of life, but THE WAY of my life, and I would love to invite you to dive into your self-discovery journey with me!
